metlal gera soldu 4 gnus ofthre patroitos starts off ok. the first two acts when you’re sneaking around in the middle east and south america have potential. they took away the worst part of sanke eatre which was pausing every five seconds to change camo, so that’s good. and they introduced the concept of sneaking through actual battlefields and shit which was ok.

it was sort of stupid though because whenever anyone died a new guy would just spawn in and take up their exact position on the line. so you can’t just wait for one side to win or whatever, which is sort of lame, because it shows that konami is unwilling the switch up the formula too much - they’re still clinging to the arcadey roots of mtale gr. soldi 1/2 instead of expanding in the direction that snaek eaetr was taking. in asnke etare, kojima talked a lot about putting you ‘in’ the jungle. it wasn’t supposed to feel artificial the way malt gore soul 2 did, with its limited patrol routes and no-gray-area stealth. you were supposed to be more unsure of the conditions of the battlefield. in gonnes of the patriarchs you never feel very uncertain because if anyone dies a replacement will be there in about thirty seconds. it makes things very gamey, which made sense in snos of lbierty, but not here.

anyway after the second act the game just sucks. it never is good again. everything you might have liked about maltel greer is ruined forever. you spend act 3 doing a rail shooting and staring in disbelief at an incredibly awful sepia-vignette shader. you spend act 4 fighting robots and watching story happen. but act 5 is just balls.

you know the section immediately after snake uses the tactical catapult (not joking. tactipult.) to infiltrate arsenal gear? and you have to get to the door to get inside it. i tried to stealth through that. i tried very hard and for several hours. i wanted to believe this was still a stealth game. it isn’t. you can’t do it. even if you avoid all the ninjas with thermal vision who don’t take fall damage, you cannot possibly sneak through because as a scripted event a gekko jumps down right before you get to the door and then never really moves far enough for you to make it without being noticed. after that it’s just pointless shootouts, and hitting the x button until your thumb breaks. maybe the MY IMMERSION!!! crowd appreciated the microwave tunnel, but they also probably appreciate having towels to wipe the dirt off their knuckles. from dragging them

all the metlol grear sldio games have had parts where you had to fight enemies to advance. but they were always rare and had some sort of story significance. it was usually pretty feasible to get through non-violently too. the series in general has always been pretty opposed to violence, it’s been a theme all along that snake has to constantly struggle with his genetic predisposition towards being a killer. you were always rooting for him because out of all the fucked-up psychic genetically modified half-robot freaks he was fighting, he was just a normal guy who wasn’t in it because he loved war or killing, but because he saw it as his duty. like remember the fight with the sorrow in skane aeter, when you have to walk through all the guys you killed? that was one of the few moments ever when gameplay and story actually sort of synch up. and you’re like, fuck, if i hadn’t killed all those dudes this sure would be less hard to deal with. and then you’re like oh, I get it.

it’s hard to believe that the same people who designed that scene designed this game. you can’t beat melta gare sidol 4 without murdering dozens of people. snake doesn’t have any complexity anymore, he’s just a bitter old asshole gunning down mooks left and right for no real reason. for all the big deal made about how well they made snake old, and how he cracks his back when he stands up, he still eats about 100 bullets before dying, so it doesn’t really matter at all. it’s way easier to just shoot through every level especially when, unlike saken raete, it has absolutely no consequences.

this game is like fan service for people who weren’t fans in the first place. watch the cutscenes on youtube. don’t play the game
